About us

15 Knots Kiteboarding School was founded in 2008 by Juan Carlos Morales with the support of friends, family and local partner Velauno’s Kiteboarding and Windsurfing shop.

First Kiteboarding school in Puerto Rico fully insured and also endorsed by the Puerto Rico Tourism Company. The school is conveniently located in the facilities of the Cafe La Plage beach club & hotel.

Company Mission

To promote Kiteboarding as an eco-friendly outdoor activity that families and friends can enjoy while exercising. We believe Kiteboarding is not a hobby, it’s a lifestyle.

Each student receives undivided attention from his instructor. Lessons are customized to students requests. We provide services with Cabrinha and Dakine which are premium  brands of Kiteboarding equipment. The gear is turned over every 4-5 months to ensure you have the best gear you can learn on no matter your level.

About the name of the school

The name 15 Knots was chosen because it is the average wind speed in the island of Puerto Rico where the school was founded and it is also an ideal wind speed to teach beginners the sport of Kiteboarding. If it’s blowing 15 knots, riders get motivated to go ride. Obviously the more experienced they get, the more wind they want. Maybe the next school will be 25 Knots…

About the logo

Inside the shield there are two wind barbs in opposite directions implying 15 Knots of wind. A wind barb is used in nautical maps to show the wind direction and speed.

The wind barb looks like a letter “L”. A long leg means 10 knots and a small one means 5 knots, when combined they mean 15 knots of wind. The barb is duplicated to look symmetric.

The shield was used as a symbol of protection and safety since the school’s # 1 focus is to teach and promote safety. Juan Carlos’ has a special love for shields after his first car at 16 years old, a 944 Porsche.

Founder of 15 Knots Kiteboarding School.
Started Kiteboarding in 1998 when there were only 4-5 Kiteboarders in the island; he was the youngest. Within 4 years, he moved to Florida to learn the art of teaching and more about the industry. He then moved back to Puerto Rico and worked as an independent instructor for a few years and gained recognition as one of the top instructors. In 2006, he partnered with the main kiteboarding and windsurfing shop in the island, Velauno. With the support of the shop, his business took off and he hasn’t looked back since. Today he is proud to run the most recommended Kiteboarding school in Puerto Rico and only one fully insured and endorsed by the Puerto Rico Tourism Company.

Since 2008, Velauno TV has featured videos of his lessons, camps and contests.
